If you are an emotional overeater, this problem probably began
early in your life. As a child, if you were not taught to manage
your emotions, you may be at higher risk for engaging in emotional
eating as an adult. Or if you had difficulty postponing
gratification as a child, threw tantrums, or expressed excessive
anger about food, this also would have put you at risk for weight
and food issues. The goal is to be able to experience a normal
range of emotions without feeling so uncomfortable with those
emotions that you use food (or other substances or behaviors) to
avoid dealing with them.
